Victims Services - About Us

Victims Services is part of the Attorney General's Department of NSW and consists of the Victims Compensation Tribunal and the Victims of Crime Bureau. Victims Services also provides support to the Victims Advisory Board. The three bodies work together to help victims of crime in New South Wales access services and entitlements to assist in their recovery. An additional role of the Victims of Crime Bureau is to co-ordinate support to families and friends of missing people. To implement this role, the Families and Friends of Missing Persons Unit was established.

Victims Compensation Tribunal
The Tribunal was established under the Victims Support and Rehabilitation Act 1996 and consists of:

  • Magistrates (including the Chairperson) who determine appeals against determinations (more about Appeals) and make orders for the recovery of monies from convicted offenders (more about Restitution)
  • Compensation Assessors who make determinations in compensation claims (more about compensation claims) and approve counselling applications (more about counselling claims)
  • Tribunal staff who provide administrative support in the processing and determination of compensation and counselling claims, appeals and the restitution process.

Victims of Crime Bureau
The Victims of Crime Bureau was established under the Victims Rights Act 1996 to provide a critical link between victims of crime and service providers throughout NSW.

Services provided by the Bureau include:

  • providing a 24 hour Victims Support Line More>>
  • administering the Approved Counselling Scheme and accrediting counsellors More>>
  • monitoring the Charter of Victims Rights More>>
  • hosting an Interagency forum of key stakeholders in victims’ services More>>
  • publishing the newsletter, the Victims of Crime Chronicle. To read the Chronicle >>
  • provide information and develop resource materials relating to support services for victims of crime.

Victims Advisory Board
The Victims Advisory Board was established under the Victims Rights Act 1996 to consult community and government support agencies on issues and policies concerning victims of crime and advise the Attorney General, on policies and reforms relating to victims compensation and support services.

The Board consists of up to 10 members appointed by the Attorney General including:

  • 4 members representing the general community,
  • a member representing the Police,
  • a member representing the Attorney General’s Department and
  • members representing other government agencies

Families and Friends of Missing Persons Unit
The Families and Friends of Missing Persons Unit (FFMPU) was established in September 2000, under an amendment to the Victims Rights Act 1996, to co-ordinate support services to the families and friends of missing persons. The FFMPU works closely with both police and non-police tracing services. More>>

Services provided by the Families and Friends of Missing Persons Unit include:

  • a free and confidential counselling service More>>
  • an e-newsletter, FFMPU e-news. Past issues may be viewed online>>
  • links to other agencies that may be able to assist in searching for a missing person More>>
  • development of the Someone is Missing website, in partnership with the Mental Health Association NSW inc, that focuses on the mental health needs of families and friends of missing persons. The address for this website is www.missingpersons.org.au
