Can I get legal advice from Legal Aid?
Yes, Legal Aid can provide 20 minutes of free legal advice. Legal advice is not means tested and you do not have to apply for a grant of legal aid to get legal advice.
At most offices you will need to make an appointment for legal advice. LawAccess NSW can assist you to find your closest legal aid office
Can I get Legal Aid to represent me?
If you need more than legal advice Legal Aid NSW may provide a lawyer to help with your case. This is called being granted legal aid. Grants of legal aid are only available in some kinds of cases, for people who are eligible based on their income and assets.
Legal aid is not free – most people will have to pay a contribution, depending on their financial circumstances and the kind of case. You can call LawAccess on 1300 888 529 to discuss your eligibility for legal aid or to get an application form .
Is Legal Aid free?
Legal Aid is not free. Most people will have to pay a contribution. The amount of your contribution depends on your financial situation and the area of law. You will need to meet some eligibility requirements for a grant of legal aid, including a means test. To help you assess whether you may be financially eligible for legal aid you can use the Means Test Indicator .
I don't think that I am eligible for a grant of legal aid, what are my other options?
Legal Aid NSW is unable to represent everyone, but this does not mean that you have no other options. LawAccess NSW can discuss your legal problem and identify other services that may be able to assist including pro bono services, community legal centres or even organise for the Law Society to send you a referral to a private solicitor.
